Living "on the moors" at Whaley Balk, the house had no running water (they used to drain brown water from the peat bogs, which then had to be strained). Originally, it also had no gas - it was lit by oil lamps, and there was no electricity. The lavatory was, of course, outside! They cooked on a solid fuel range. Lena's niece (EAS) used to love her fruit pies made using pastry made with all lard. (EAS) |
