Kate ran a drapery at 41 Skillings Lane and she and Walter lived over and behind the shop.
Kate had a bungalow built behind Skillings Lane ( which became no 53) on a plot of land that
Francis SMITS had previously had an allotment on, at which point Kate's son Ken
and his wife Gwen moved into the drapery. After this, Kate had a newsagent and sweet shop next door too. (EAS) Kate moved into the flat over the newsagent. Elizabeth used to go there after school on Fridays and they always made apple dumplings. There were no fridges in those days, so Kate had a meat/milk store outside the backdoor. Kate used to keep eggs in a solution (of ising glass) in an enamel bucket. (EAS) |
