The Connors were a formidable bunch, well known in the Catholic community of Islington. Charles Borromeo Connor had a fierce temper and ruled his family with a will of iron. Any man seeking permission to marry one of his daughters was sent away to the Parish Priest to receive instruction and become a Catholic before he could ask again. All of Charles' prospective sons-in-law but one were sent to the priest. Philip Archer Gummett, however, had decided to become a Catholic and sought instruction at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Eden Grove, Islington. The Parish Priest introduced him to Charles Joseph Eugene Connor and the pair became friends. Charles stood as Philip's Sponsor when he was received into the Catholic Church. Later, Charles took Philip home to meet his family. Philip met Mary Flavella and they fell in love. The couple married in the same church in July 1920 and began a remarkable dynasty of their own. |
